Murex Zerd is a short story set in the dark sci-fi and cyberpunk ChromaSpyke universe by Alexander Mharcei.
One candidate. Three choices.
In a system that punishes hesitation and rewards obedience, advancement is never just earned. It is tested.
Brannic Varn is a factory technician on a corporate lunar colony, living contract to contract beneath poured concrete and constant surveillance. When he is summoned for a promotion interview, he expects questions, evaluations, and procedure. What he finds instead are sealed corridors, mechanical intermediaries, and an assessment designed to destabilize rather than confirm competence.
As the process unfolds, the interview becomes something more intimate and more dangerous. Observation turns into participation. Procedure becomes implication. The cost of advancement shifts from qualification to action.
Murex Zerd is a dark cyberpunk short story about surveillance, moral compression, and the moment a system reveals what it truly rewards.
